After initial evaluation, Music Therapist will determine if music therapy is appropriate and outline treatment plan (goals, recommendations for sessions frequency and length of treatment)
Music therapy focuses on meeting therapeutic aims, which distinguishes
it from musical entertainment or music education. People of any age or
ability may benefit from a music therapy program, regardless of musical
skill or background.
Music therapy may be recommended as a separate treatment or may complement speech therapy services. Both music and speech rely on auditory – verbal medium therefore speech-language and music therapy may cater for the same communication goals i.e., strengthening child's ability to sense a rhythm will strengthen his/her ability to produce speech sounds and form words and sentences, music therapy may improve child's sound perception and ability to process spoken messages (improve receptive language skills), singing and using winds may enhance oral motor control, music supports language learning, effecting vocabulary acquisition, proper intonation and grammar, as well as encouraging fluency.
